Description
On typed listing "35.21; Nsalu rock paintings; 12.9.60; Zambia; Central; heritage; rock painting; Nsalu cave; rock shelter; Batwa; Serenje district; art; present."
The paintings on this section of rock are made of primarily white and red pigment, while there are some sections of yellow-beige paint and two paintings which use a darker orange. These paintings are mostly comprised of the same patterns of two closely spaced parallel lines as before which are typically straight or follow slight curves. The top right of the image is mostly made of short white versions, with a rough band of yellow-beige paint which stretches half way across the picture and is capped by a series of vertical parallel lines. This section also includes the two darker orange paintings, which are notably longer than the white ones and are adjacent to the band of yellow-beige. The top left includes a combination of longer white and yellow-beige lines, which forms in one area a grid of lines, and the other a triangle. The middle of the picture has the largest individual painting, two red parallel lines which stretch up from the bottom of the image, through the middle, curve to the right and back down again off the bottom of the page in an arch, maintaining equal spacing between the two lines. inside the arch, there are some red vertical patterns, and white horizontal ones. Notably, the red arch seems to cover some of the white patterns, implying it may have been made after. The bottom left of the image contains vertical white and red paintings, with some of them including three to five vertical lines connected at the bottom and notably a small white circle near the corner of the image. It is hard to see due to the blurring at the edge of the image, however there may be a small section of white dots in the very corner. Interestingly, in this area the white paint seems to be painted on top of the red, implying there may have been a progression of:
vertical red lines --> vertical white lines --> red arch. [FG 10/04/25]
