"The erection of the Power Station serving Kano city on the Challawa River in 1931 led to the building of a modern road through the district. This was, according to Leslie, ' the first event for a hundred years to enliven the annals of a District described in 1911 as "being fortunate in having no history"'!... The author was impressed by the scale of dry-season farming, both on non-irrigated rafi, which produced valuable crops of wheat and sweet potatoes, and on irrigated farms along certain streams to the east of the District and along the Challawa River, where onions, wheat and pepper were grown."
