Description

A portrait of a chief with his attendants in front of a building with an open veranda under a corrugated roof. The chief is sitting on a throne draped with leopard skin. He wears a tall conical red hat with feathers to the front. He has a stripe of white chalk (nzu) across his eyes. He is wearing a burgundy coloured robe, embroidered in geometric designs with golden thread. He is holding a carved elephant tusk which rests on the ground in front of him. To his right stands an attendant wearing a patterns waist cloth and holding a ceremonial cutlass in his right hand. On the ground in front is a ceremonial handbell bag. To the Chief's left stands another attendant also in striped waist cloth and holding a ceremonial cutlass. Next to the attendant is another man, wearing a cap, with a striped robe over a plain tunic, and holding a ceremonial long spear. He has an ivory bracelet on each wrist. [PB 22/11/2024]
