Description

A portrait of a chief and his attendants in front of a thatched building. The chief is sitting on a throne draped in leopard skin and cloth. He wears a patterned head scarf a leopard skin head band, and a red velvet gown with rows of golden thread at the bottom. He has a stripe of white chalk (nzu) across his cheeks and eyes. He holds a sword in his hands. He has two up turned golden trident ties hung on sashes around his neck. On the ground, in front of him, are placed a horn and a ceremonial box on which are attached several handbells. On either side are two attendants, wearing woollen hats, a sash across the chest, and long striped waist cloths. The attendants are holding ceremonial cutlasses in their right hands. Spectators stand to the side. [PB 22/11/2024]
