Description

A portrait of an Oganochi mgbedike masquerader standing, facing the camera. In the background are spectators seated and standing, a thatched hut and trees.
The masquerader is wearing a full length cloth costume with light and dark striped ruffles on body and his upper arms and legs, with porcupine quills hanging from the edges of the ruffles. The masquerader is wearing a dark wooden helmet mask, with white paint accentuating the mouth, teeth and eyes. It is similar to an 'lion elephant mask'. There are two feathers held in the front of the band at the bottom of the horns. On the top of the mask are four carved horns curling inwards, with a carved animal finial joining the tips of the horns. [Description from record P.767078.GIJ, PB 30/07/2024]
