Description

An Ogbugulu mau mask. The mask consists of a side view of an Ogbugulu Mau helmet mask modelled by a male. The face of the mask is painted white with darker paint/pigments to accentuate the eyebrows, eyes, mouth, hair and crested structure. The eyes are small slits with rounded pupils, delicate nose, and the mouth is open depicting teeth. There are designs on the cheek and round circles on the side of the face. The top of the mask depicts an elaborate crested coiffure in the central arched area there are pegs which are painted in different colours. The curls or swirled designs are incised to represent hair. The shape of the mask is extended forward at an angle. One can see the holes that were used to sew fabric to the mask. (The masquerader is not wearing a costume which suggests he is not performing).
