Description

A documentation photograph of a carved wooden helmet mask on display in an exhibition, against a backdrop of an Ibo textile. The mask carved from dark wood, and has stylised hair with four buns and a central crest. The face has angled forehead, deep-set eye slits, a small nose and two thick rings around the neck. [PB 31/08/2023]

The figure is now in the care of MAA, reference 1927.2028, and described as: "Bundu or Sowei mask from the women's Sande society, representing a woman's head with elaborate hairstyle and rolls of neck fat." [Description from object record 1927.2028, PB 07/09/2023]
