Description

A portrait of a shopkeeper. She is sitting outside the doorway to her shop with an infant sitting next to her. She is wearing a striped cloth wrapper and headdress. She is holding a bundle of vegetable tubers in her hands. There is a pile of tubers and roots on the ground under a tree in front of her. The box is an old Tate & Lyle sugar cube freight box. There is a large white enamel pail in the foreground. In the doorway of her shop is a large basket on top of an upturned box. The basket contains small measuring bowls of rice. There is a table behind on which there are stacks of tinned goods and bottles. On the ground next to the infant is an old oil drum on which there are blocks of soap, several small bowls and netting.
