Description

A "musket flint from the Doddington, an East Indiaman wrecked off Port Elizabeth (1755) on her way to India. The flints on board (2 firkins of them - ? 6000) could have been supplied by William Levett of Northfleet, later to be appointed gunflint maker to the Board of Ordnance (1761). This flint was acid washed when cleaning a brass artifact from a piece of conglomerate. The chip shows a black flint, typical of N.W. Kent." [De Lotbiniere's caption]
