Description
One "wedge type musket flint from the East Indiaman 'Doddington' wrecked off 'Bird Island' - Port Elizabeth - RSA - in 1755. It was carrying troops & 2 firkins of flints (? 600 or so) which were almost certainly supplied by William Levett of Northfleet (next Gravesend), where the flint tended to be black. One chipped gunflint shows that it was made from black flint. Wreck belongs to David Allen. ?Story not yet released, 26.3.79." [De Lotbiniere's caption]
