Description
Black and white photograph of a Benin Bronze statue of a Cockerel. The statue, known as 'Okukor' has been identified as one of the thousands of objects looted from the Oba's Palace when British forces led their 'punishment raid' on Benin City in 1897. It was given as a gift to Jesus College, Cambridge in 1905 by George William Neville. The Cockerel statue was restituted to Nigeria in 2021. [GO 16/12/2022]
