Description

Pen and ink drawing by Arthur J.L. Gordon of a thatched house, rectangular in shape, and one of the houses in the interior of the fortified Armed Native Constabulary camp at Nasaucoko in the western highlands of Vitilevu during Sir Arthur Gordon’s “Little War” of 1876, which crushed the last vestiges of highland independence and in so doing effectively converted the so-called rebel tribes to Christianity. This house on the raised mound or yavu is almost certainly that of Walter Carew, the commissioner for Colo. [Fergus Clunie, 14/7/2003, description based on record, JD 27/11/2022]
