Description
On Manual listing: "Fiji.
List of Woodcuts.
18. Native hut." [typed text signed and dated F.J. Hayter, 27/02/1933]
A pen and ink drawing based on F.H. Dufty photograph's preparations for a magiti (feast) before a chief’s house, with raised, stone-faced yavu and ramps to its doors. The photograph has been simplified to show only one man standing outside the Fijian chief’s vale (house) thatched with Makita leaves in a rectangular shape with extended ridge pole.
The chief's house is on a raised, stone-faced yavu and cleated log ramps to its doors. The house is unusual for the little “porches” about its doorways, which have not been thatched, exposing expanses of reeded (or in this case split bamboo?) walling.
