Description

On Manual listing: "Fiji.
List of Woodcuts.
19. Native hut." [typed text signed and dated F.J. Hayter, 27/02/1933]

Two rough woodblocks of A.J.L. Gordon’s sketch of the matanikoro (gateway) of the fortified Armed Native Constabulary camp at Nasaucoko in the western highlands of Vitilevu during Sir Arthur Gordon’s “Little War” of 1876, which crushed the last vestiges of highland independence and in so doing effectively converted the so-called rebel tribes to Christianity.
The matanikoro (gateway) is fortified in the traditional Fijian manner, with a platform above it and with fenced sides. The palisading is also traditional, with bamboo, which is plentiful thereabouts, being used for the uprights. [Fergus Clunie, 14/7/2003, description based on record, JD 27/11/2022]
