Woodblock of a sketch by Arthur J.L. Gordon, “Nasaucoko, 17th Feb. 1876”. Nasaucoko was the site of the Armed Native Constabulary fortified camp during the Vitilevu highland campaign of 1875-1876, and of a fortified village of the only just Christianised Namataku tribe, to which the young unmarried woman belongs.
The woman is wearing a likudradra skirt, which is of a type that was worn by unmarried girls and women from puberty onwards. Both her hairstyle and liku are traditional, the Kai Namataku being Christian, but not yet having had the chance to adopt Christian clothing.
