Bibliographical Reference: Poignant, Axel and Roslyn. 1972. Kaleku. London: Angus and Robertson, p.4. This extract comes from a children's book, written about a boy named Kaleku and his family in Gumine: "The Chimbu build their houses along the tops of ridges that jut into the valleys. Kaleku's grandfather has often told him how, in the time before European patrol came to Gumine, the people on the neighbouring ridges were enemies and a sharp look – out had to be kept to prevent surprise attacks.
The people plant forest trees, tall casuarinas and clumps of feathery bamboo near the houses because they give shade and are useful. And they make their vegetable gardens even on the steepest slopes because there is not much flat land near Gumine." [KK 18/08/2022]
