"According to my Dad's (Ben Davis) notes, there were two purposes for sharpening both ends: The slabs were an inch or more thick and about 5 or 6 inches wide and perhaps 5 or 6 feet long. They sharpened both ends of each slab so that one end was driven into the grown while the top end made a very unfriendly obstruction for thieves who might try to enter their garden. Also when the bottom end rotted then they could also turn it end for end and reuse it as a fence slab." (Jon Davis)
"you are partly correct both end of the slabs are sharpened, the other end is normally driven into the ground & the top end remained as obstruction for thieves & also to prevent from collecting rain during rainy season nor would fathom to corroding.
