This extract comes from a children's book, written about a boy named Kaleku and his family in Gumine: "There is much to do to prepare a new garden. Fires are lit to clear the ground, trees cut and strong fences built to keep out the pigs. Kaleku liked to help his father with this work. It was real men's work. He fetched and carried for him and went to the big river to bring back drinking water for the men. Father showed him how to stake out the garden into smaller plots and how to make drainage trenches. Then he helped to plant the cuttings of sugar – cane and banana, the food which men grow." [KK 16/08/2022]
