Bibliographical reference: Poignant, Axel and Roslyn. 1972. Kaleku. London: Angus and Robertson, p. 19. This extract comes from a children's book, written about a boy named Kaleku and his family in Gumine. "One day Kuma – ire took Erita with her to the market. She had promised they would look for a small piglet that Erita could have for her very own. There were so many exciting things at the market: bird of paradise plumes, a cuscus (that costs a lot), a chicken, even a cooking pot. But most people bought vegetables – peanuts, perhaps, or spring onions, and some even brought kau – kau. 'Who'd want to buy kau – kau?' Erita asked. 'Everybody grows it.'
'Everybody likes coming to the market,' Mother laughed. 'When I was a girl there was no market because we were always fighting, but now people come from everywhere to buy or exchange things and to gossip.'
At that moment Erita saw a plump little piglet.
'Oh, can I have that one?'
Kuma – ire thought it looked a nice pig, but she didn't say so. She has to bargain with its owner.
It was a hard bargain. The old lady took Kuma – ire's bilum as well as the kau – kau, peanuts and other good food inside it.
'There,' said Mother as she handed the pig to Erita, 'look after it carefully. Never let it stray. If somebody finds it in their garden they will kill it.'
'Don't worry,' Erita said, 'I'll tie a rope around its leg and keep it near me always.'
'Hallo,' said Erita as she hugged the little pig.
'What a funny name for a pig!' teased Mother.
And that's how Hallo got his name.
Everywhere Erita went Hallo went too." [KK 15/08/2022]
