This extract is from a children's book about children named Eti, Timi, and Sylviane and their life in Raiatea: "On the way they stopped to talk to Hape who was making a canoe. Patiently striking the top of his gouge with a piece of wood, he shaped the hard uru or breadfruit timber of the hull.
'In the old days,' Ro'o explained, 'the great double canoes our people made for their sea voyages were many times larger than this small outrigger.'
'And they only had stone tools,' Hape added.
'There must have been many more large trees in the forest in those days,' said Eti.
'Perhaps,' replied Father. 'However the great canoes were not carved from one trunk. The largest trees were only used to make the keels. The sides were built up of planks, lashed together with rope made from coconut fibre.'" [KK 03/01/2023]
