This extract is from a children's book about children named Eti, Timi, and Sylviane and their life in Raiatea: "Every now and then the men prepared a feast for some important visitor. Eti and Timi's mouths watered as they watched the men pack the food into the big earth oven. A fire burnt all night, heating the stones for the oven. In the early morning the pit was lined with them and layers of chicken, pork, and fish in palm-leaf packets, were quickly placed over them. Trays of poi — a soft mixture of papaya and breadfruit — were placed on top, and bunches of fei – the wild bush banana – and halved breadfruit stacked round the edge. Water was added to make steam, then all was quickly covered with layers of green banana leaves, and sealed with sacking and earth.
This was man's work, but soon the boys would be big enough to help."
