Documentary photograph of four crescents.
The top centre crescent is from Turkey, and now in the care of the MAA, reference 1927.963, and described as: "Amulet - Horse amulet. Two boar's tusks joined together with metal (?silver) forming a crescent. The ends of each decorated with same metal, an elaborate inverted horn shaped pendant decorated with imitation stones hang from it, and a row of blue beads.

The bottom centre amulet is from Uganda and constructed from leopard's claws and beadwork and is now in the care of the MAA, reference 1927.436, and described as: "Amulet - There are two catalogue cards for this item.
One reads, "Claw crescent amulet decorated with beads. Uganda. Ridgeway bequest". The second card reads, "A crescent formed of two leopard claws of a feline joined together and covered with blue and white beads. Collected by Roscoe.
This is Fig.6 Plate XIX R. Anthrop. Institute Vol. XXXVIII 1908. R's paper on Origin of Turkish Crescents". Old label attached to catalogue card reads, "Enkole. Ensiriba or fetish. In Uganda this is worn by children to protect them against nyony - a disease common to children". "Ridgeway Bequest" also stamped on old label.
