Description
Documentary photograph of the back of an ivory figure of a woman with scarifications on her chest, stomach and back, from West Coast of Africa.
The figure is in the care of MAA, reference 1927.321, and described as "Figure; staff; carving - Ivory figure from top of a staff. The figure is a female with keloids between breasts and above navel. She is kneeling with right hand on knees and left hand (now missing) was against cheek - only fingers remain. Eyes are of glass. The back of head is broken off. Large keloid above buttocks.
According to Torday and Joyce this figure is Loango. French Equatorial Africa. [Description from record 1927.321, JD 11/02/2020]
