"18 August 1938
Left Kala 0730 and over the plains to Samada.
Spent nearly an hour on the Kala Plain trying to catch a grey pony that had put Khan Gul on his back and unshipped his saddle but had been held by Archie. The broken saddle, haversack, glasses etc. restrapped on and the pony led but got away with a flourish. The chase started and, when the pony grew bored, finished.
Carried Twister on front of saddle to the rise midway across the plain and there had elevenses. Handed pony and Twister over to Archie and walked the grey beast. The first part of plain arid and very poor grazing -- after the hump much better, some water in pools and lots of sheep.
Entered the Samada nullah and when retying a boot lace the grey got away again. Started back for Kala but Archie and Gul Khan mounted and a local shepherd cut off his retreat.
“Brown Bess” had her foal with her who was fed at all halts and made for diversion by being fun to drive ahead.
Arrived Samada - where a river at least 2,000,000 galls./hr flows down cultivated valley about 1 mile broad. This river starts in ponds and before being joined by the Thumba Rub Chu is about 300,000 galls./hr ..." [JD 26/01/2020]
