"10 Aug 1938 Left Tsomgo 0600 hrs.
Arr. Chumbitang 1200 hrs (13,500’)
Mist and cloud most of the way and some rain.
Visibility poor, max. 2000x and Nathu La views disappointing.
Road. A good bridle path with easy gradient all the way.
No huts at Yenkongteng but some about 1 1/2 miles from Tsomgo.
Side slopes vary from 2/1 to 1/5 and M.T. alignments possible.
Nathu La (14,350’) passable by zig-zags.
Camping grounds. 1 Bde by huts at stream crossing
2871 1167, 1 Bde. S. of Nathu La near lake (1 mile)
1 Bn. on top of Nathu La
1 Bn. N. of Nathu La near pond (1 mile from pass)
Lots of water within 1/2 mile of pass and plentiful everywhere else.
Fuel, limited most of way, rhododendrons and shrubs but not trees plentiful again. 2 miles N. of Nathu La where thick pine woods commence.
Road alignment would in several cases have to cross rock avalanches.
Camping grounds for 1/2 Bn scattered between Chumbitang & grass covered spur 1/2 mile westwards below road." [JD 26/01/2020]
