Description
On Catalogue Card: "Kenya - Suk (or Turkana?) 58.S.2.
"Elder", taken at a meeting between Karamojong & West Suk. May be Suk, or Turkana."
Portrait of a Suk? or Turkana? man and elder. The man is holding a headrest / stool, called 'Ekcholong' by Turkana, and "a very special possession to every man in Turkana community. It is portable and used by this nomadic people as a stool to sit on and also as a headrest/ wooden pillow. It is said to protect the man’s hair, which is often plaited and oiled, from dirt. The handle makes it easily portable and a wooden stick/staff is slid on the leather strap.
Women are barred from touching it or using it and they therefore traditionally sit on the earthen floor." [Information provided by Njeri Gachihi, Rethinking Relationships Project, 15 December 2020, JD 04/03/2021]
