Africa, East. Didinga
Didinga warrior showing Temedek. Black feathers reserved to senior warriors, as is the pattern of ear-ring, known as Logumak.

On Print for duplicate image P.50089.ACH2: "A Didinga warrior, wearing the headdress of growing hair (temedek) which is the mark of their grade warrior status in age-grade system. The black ostrich feather is reserved for senior warriors and senior grades their elders. The temedek is grown when the youth passes from their status of noviciate warrior to that of junior warrior, and it is the general ambition to grow as large as a one as possible, sometimes so large that it obscures the vision & has to be cut back from the eyes during war."
