Umbilical Cords.

The Balongo shown are in the care of MAA. On the left, reference E 1907.299, described as: "Omulongo. Charm containing the umbilical cord of a deceased king. The container is oval in shape and covered in leather. The leather is decorated with cowrie shells interspersed with blue and yellow glass beads. There is a thick leather strap at the top of the container, with the remains of hair." [Description from record E 1907.299, JD 08/02/2024]

In the centre, reference E 1907.302, "Omulongo. Charm containing the umbilical cord of a deceased king. The container is cylindrical in shape, and made of tightly rolled barkcloth, covered with red, blue, pink and white glass beads in zigzag shapes, with a seven pointed star on the top and the base. Long loop handle, covered with blue and white glass beads in a zigzag pattern. [Description from record E 1907.302, JD 08/02/2024]

On the right, reference E 1907.300, described as: "Omulongo. Charm containing the umbilical cord of a deceased king. Container is cylindrical and made of tightly rolled brown bark cloth. Long loop handle attached to one end, bound to the container with string; handle is wrapped in string." [Description from record E 1907.300, JD 08/02/2024]
