The eight spout Lublae (deity vessel) is now in the care of MAA, reference E 1907.303, and described as "Lubale. Deity vessel. A globular shaped vessel of brown earthenware, bearing a faint pattern of incised lines. The central rimmed circular opening is surrounded by eight upstanding spouts which project from the rounded shoulders. Small bag of pottery sherds found inside. It is used for giving criminals drugged beer before execution, in order to give the king power over their ghosts." [from object description record, JD 24/05/2024]
Hanging from the sheet in the centre is possibly a Jjembe? and possibly in the care of MAA, reference ROS 1920.414?, and described as "Jjembe. Power object. Comprises of a length of light brown barkcloth attached to an oval shaped bundle. Inside of bundle is a hard object, possibly shell; bundle is secured to length of barkcloth with fibre string. Worn by women, to help them have children."
The shield on the left is now in the care of MAA, reference E 1907.239, and described as "An oblong shield of hide, each edge convex. A grooved line runs around the border on the front face. Central wooden stave handle on reverse bound round with hide thongs which pierce the shield at intervals; the grip is unbound and protected by an oval piece of hide. A loop of vegetable cord runs from end to end of the stave. A feathered ornament is wrapped around the stave where it joins the leather of the shield; at the other end is a small wooden cylinder, open at one end."
The shield hanging in centre is now in the care of MAA, reference E 1907.238, and described as "A shield made from hide with a wooden handle. Roughly oval in shape with a slightly curved cross-section; there is now some warping to the hide distorting the original shape. The front has been decorated with diagonal lines that emanate from the centre. The reverse has a long stick secured in place by strips of leather, that extends over one side of the shield. The stick is centred and acts as the handle with a section left exposed for gripping. Beneath this section is a second layer of hide for reinforcement. Tied to each end of the stick is a length of barkcloth forming a loop, possibly for suspension."
The shield on the far right is now in the care of MAA, reference E 1907.237, and described as "Elongated oval hide shield. The outer surface is slightly convex; the outer edge is of turned-out hide. A circular cane stave runs down the centre, bound to the shield by hide thongs, which pierce the shield in nine places. In the centre the stave is left uncovered to form a hand-grip, which is further protected by an auxiliary oval of hide. Near the ends of the stave is fastened a long loop of fibre. The front face of the shield has been slashed in several places." [from object description record, JD 24/05/2024]
