Description

On Catalogue Card: "Uganda. 50. Uganda 143. 48.35.
Drum of god of chase."

Documentary photograph of the "Drum of the god of the chase (with the sacred objects taken from inside it)." The photograph was probably made by John Roscoe in Uganda prior to his donating the drum to the MAA in 1920.
The drum, reference ROS 1920.319, is described as "Drum belonging to Dungu, god of the chase. The body is wooden, cylindrical, with conical lower part that comes to two rounded feet, meeting that the drum cannot stand upright on its base. The base is encased in leather, and the top is covered in an ox hide skin. These two pieces of hide are connected with straight lacing, made from strips of twisted hide. There is two looped handles around the top of the drum, connected with leather strings. After the drum was collected, part of the skin was cut away and replaced with another, much lighter patch of animal skin." [Description from Object record ROS 1920.319, JD 10/11/2022]
