Publication: Similar image [T.133204.MST] published in 'Self-Decoration in Mount Hagen', 1971, after p.164 and captioned: “Colour plate 22 The aesthetics of bright and dark contrasts: blue trade-store beads form a background for white cowries; the Superb crest is bordered by a bright roundel below, on top by an array of red parrot feathers and the sulphur crest feathers of the white cockatoo; above these are dark kumin, themselves set against the ruddy plumes of the Red bird of paradise”. Although the overall quality aimed at here is 'brightness', as the woman's face-paint underlines, feathers are arranged in a way that contrasts their colours. From the back of the crest of the Superb bird is a circlet of scarlet puklør parrot feathers and the yellow crest feathers of the white cockatoo.
