Related Archive: Draft caption for image in document ‘Caption to most of bl. + wh. photos used + not used SDMH’ with the following text: “The older woman here is wearing the kind of decorations she might put on for everyday; as a married woman she does not wear the swathes of beads round her neck that younger girl do, though she has a pearlshell beneath them. Often, once they are married, women do not regularly wear even this amount of decoration. This is, in fact, a rather special occasion - a bridewealth. Next to her, holding her baby, is the bride, with talcum powder oh her face and neck beads. Her hair has been trained to grow in long ringlets which are shaped with the application of grease. Such ringlets are a mark of beauty, but most women keep their hair short.” [Paper Archives will be deposited at Girton College, Cambridge, date to be confirmed. KH 22/11/2016]

A grant from the Wenner-Gren Foundation Historical Archives Program supported the documentation and preservation of the Strathern photographic collection. [JD 6/11/2017]
