Description

On Strathern's listing: At Mope moka pena: prestation from Membo to Roklaka (funeral feast for Membo Ok).
Funeral party for Klamakae (tribe) Umndi (personal name) – Umndi had recently died so this occasion for Ok was an occasion for public mourning for him as well. The women are from Membo (married-in) with some Klamakae. Umndi lived with the Membo, as his pamal (‘mother’s kin’). Umndi’s widow is in centre, holding a baby. (Currently unknown who the man is, wailing and pulling his hair; the women were wailing until the moment of the photo.)
The sides of pork are arranged to be counted and distributed. Marilyn Strathern assumes they belong to the main funeral payments, ie in relation to OK, who had died some time ago.
