Description

On Catalogue Card: "Nigeria (N.). XLVII.3
58.
N. Nigeria.
"Attahiru Sarikin Muslimin (’Commder of the faithful’) Emir of Sokoto. He is a Fulani on the paternal side, being the great grandson of Othman Dan Fodio founder of the Fulani empire; but his mother and grandmother were I believe Negro women & he himself has lost all Fulani characteristics - light complexion, straight hair, etc.
The man not on the mat is the Waziri (Visier or prime minister) of Sokoto, & he is also a Fulani.
I presume his family has retained its racial purity: at any rate he exhibits well the racial characteristics. He is quite blind and very old.
about 1900.
Major A.N. Burdon."

On Leading Catalogue Card: "Nigeria.
Most of the Nigerian slides with white labels are those of A.J.N. Tremearne."
