Context: This image was researched by Fadoju as part of the 'Rethinking Relationships Research Outputs - Nigeria', Horniman Museum, who provided the following information: "This is a photograph of the Emir of Ilorin, Sulaymanu dan Aliyu, on the occasion of the presentation of Ceremonial Staff to minor chiefs – district head - by the Resident commissioner.
Sulaymanu dan Aliyu who was the sixth Emir of Ilorin was the ruler of Ilorin when Thubman Goldie of Royal Niger Company imposed a treaty on Ilorin after a period of sustained armed resistance against Niger Coast Constabulary Force. Ilorin subsequently came under British control, and effectively became part of Northern Nigeria Protectorate on 5 March 1897.
From the photograph, certain distinction can be noted between the Emirs and the district chiefs: the emir is sitting on a chair while the newly appointed district heads sit on the floor; the emir is wearing a threaded wide brimmed hat over his turban while the district heads wear only a turban."
