Five boys standing in a line on a beach, facing in different directions. Each wears a knee-length cloth, [?mefau]. Two of the boys are wearing a flower in their hair above the left ear. The same five boys are depicted, in the same poses, but standing closer together, in Chinnery 1927:71, plate 45, captioned "Mortlock types"., from record P.56342.ACH2, JD 27/6/2012]

Date: These photographs were taken on a voyage of the Government vessel, the SS Franklin, between January and March 1925. Chinnery records (1927: 67) that his party arrived in the Mortlocks on Thursday, 5th March, and left the following day for the Tasman Islands. [Mark Elliott 26/03/04]

Bibliographical Reference: Chinnery (1927:68-70) writes that the inhabitants of the Mortlock Islands (also known as Tau-u or Marqueen Islands) lived on the island of Kapeiatu, and were indentured to a Mrs. Calder, who owned the Islands and ran a plantation on them. The inhabitants referred to themselves as Taku. [Mark Elliott 26/03/04]
