Head and shoulders portrait of Enocha, an older Meriam man who was an important informant for the Expedition members on Mer. He has closely cut hair and a long beard and moustache and is wearing a neckerchief and jacket. He is sitting facing the camera in front of a cloth covered board used as a backdrop. Physical Condition: There are two large cracks in the upper right-hand corner of the lanternslide.

Named Person: Enocha was an important informant for the Expedition members on Mer. It was also Enocha (and Wano) who made the models of the masks Malo-Bomai for Haddon; these masks are now in UCMAA Z.9440, Z.9441. [Jude Philp 8/3/1999, from record N.22922.ACH2, ID 8/3/2012]

Context: This type of photograph served the dual purpose of being a momento/studio portrait for the sitter and a record of the sitter for the physical anthropological and ethnographic work of the Expedition; some portraits were taken in exchange for assistance with psychological testing (Myers 1898).
