Description
“Burial Ceremony. Northern Territories, Gold Coast.
The burial is just over, the deceased’s son is supported by kinsmen as he squats over the grave. The corpse has some seed grain in his hand & the son leans back to return these seeds just as the corpse is finally laid to rest. Thus the dead is magically stopped from carrying the fertility of the crops away with him.” [Fortes' Annotation]
“Final rite - small son retrieves grain from the corpse’s hand.” [Fortes' Annotation]
