Description

View of the back section of one batang (branch) of the longhouse at Kampung Benuk, showing a series of connected open-air bamboo drying platforms built behind each individual apartment. A pair of children lean over the low bamboo fence of the platform nearest the camera.
The longhouse has a large triangular thatched attap roof and gable. The gable-end facing the camera has been turned into a small extension with split bamboo walls. The drying platforms have bamboo slat floors and low bamboo ‘fences’ on all sides. A long, narrow ladder consisting of notches cut into a single wooden plank rests against the end of the drying platform facing the camera, leading up to it. A clothes line hangs over each of the drying platforms.
On the right can be seen another batang of the longhouse, mostly with thatched attap roofs, and possibly one zinc roof. Beyond it, in the background, are coconut trees and a mountain.
The ground around the longhouse is mostly covered in thick grass and other foliage.
