Dances at Gangtok [Williamson’s description]
The performance here is very similar to the image in P.96557.WIL. Note parts of the tripod (for camera) in the foreground)
The masked dancers, or the ‘defenders of faith’ wear wooden painted masks (‘bag) and sumptuous silk brocade costumes. They are surrounded by a circle of armed chaprasis. The ritual they are performing is most probably gcod. There is an ornamental applique tent in the background [Cech’s description].
