P.99974.VH

Description

F.H. Dufty studio portrait of a Christian “soldier” or sotia of the Armed Native Constabulary in review or fighting dress. Most details of his dress, other than the cock tail feathers in his hair and his beaded necklace, plus the fact that he is wearing a smoked rather than white barkcloth iwabale and a patterned rather than a plain malo loincloth, concur with P.99970.VH, P.99972.VH, and P.99968.VH. [Plain buckled cartridge belts of the type he is wearing were also issued to the A.N.C.].
Circa 1875-1876. [Fergus Clunie, 14/7/2003]
