Description
F.H. Dufty studio portrait of a man in Christian warrior garb, with a cock’s tail feather and ornamental comb in his hair, and a batinivuaka or boar tusk pendant at this throat, and holding a gata club. He has a qato or lavei bracelet made from a trochus or sici shell above his left elbow, and a fringed white barkcloth vesa round his upper right arm, and wears a fringed white barkcloth iwabale or shoulder sash. His old time malo loincloth is hidden beneath his fringed white barkcloth waist sash and pandanus leaf liku overskirt. His calf muscles are bound with beaded vesasausauwai wrappings. Notice the rows of cicatrices on his upper left arm.
