Description
Studio portrait of a manacled and shorn Kai Colo or Vitilevu highland convict - probably taken prisoner in the Ba Campaign of 1873. A sisi or vuasagale whaletooth necklace has been strung round his neck, and an iulatavatava throwing club thrust derisively through the waistband of his liku overskirt. What were probably pinioning cords or the marks left by same round both of his upper arms have been retouched to look like qato bracelets [See P.99958.VH for such pinioning marks]. See also P.87301.VH, P.87337.VH, P.99956.VH and P.99958.VH.
