Description
Portrait cut from a larger F.H. Dufty photograph, mis-identified as “Ratu Tio” or Josefa Celua, the third son of Ratu Seru Cakobau, Vunivalu of Bau, but is actually Ratu Timoce Tavanavanua, Ratu Seru Cakobau and Yadi Samanunu’s second son. He is wearing a beaded neck band and a fringed tartan throw or travel rug as an isulu skirt.
The occasion is the council of chiefs or bosevakaturaga that the governor, Sir Arthur Gordon, convened at Waikava on the south coast of Vanualevu in November of 1877. [Fergus Clunie, 14/7/2003, updated JD 21/1/2012]
