Description

Studio portrait of Ratu Timoce Tavanavanua, second son of Ratu Seru Cakobau, Vunivalu of Bau and Tui Viti or King of Fiji. He wears the smoked barkcloth ivauvau or hair wrapper and the fringed white barkcloth iwabale or shoulder sash of a chief, and is dressed in a fringed isulu skirt and barkcloth waist sash. Note the stand of the photographer’s clamp behind his feet.
Taken in the early 1870s, during the time of the Cakobau government of 1871-1874. [Fergus Clunie, 14/7/2003]
