Studio portrait of a young chief of Tonga-Viti or part Tongan extraction, with a comparatively short hairstyle of the type acceptable to the Wesleyans.
The youth is holding an iulatavatava throwing club, wears a batinivuaka boar tusk throat pendant and an iwabale sash of oiled and smoked barkcloth. His white malo loincloth is worn tied high up under his rib cage in the challenging malowala style, and he has its trailing train wound round him. Round his waist he wears a black likusausauwai kilt.
Circa 1875-1876. [Fergus Clunie, 14/7/2003, from record P.4104.ACH1, updated JD 7/11/2011]
