Description

“Thakombau’s brother” - see P.99842.VH. [Fergus Clunie, 14/7/2003]

F.H. Dufty photograph of Ratu Josefa Celua, the brother of Ratu Seru Cakobau, Vunivalu of Bau.
The portrait has been cropped to form a head and shoulders portrait of a bearded man. The original photograph is a group portrait of Ratu Seru Cakobau, Vunivalu of Bau and other high chiefs, seated in front of the same chief’s house at Waikava on the south coast of Vanualevu. In the uncropped version it can be seen that Ratu Josefa Celua is wearing a gatuvakatoga wrapper, and sitting astride the log ramp to a chief’s house holding a knife. ... The occasion was the council of chiefs or bosevakaturaga which the governor, Sir Arthur Gordon, convened at Waikava in November 1877. [Fergus Clunie, 14/7/2003, from record P.99842.VH , updated JD 26/11/2011]
