F.H. Dufty photograph of Ratu Josefa Celua, the brother of Ratu Seru Cakobau, Vunivalu of Bau. The bearded man is wearing a gatuvakatoga wrapper, and sitting astride the log ramp to a chief’s house holding a knife.
The portrait has been cropped from a group photograph of Ratu Seru Cakobau, Vunivalu of Bau and other high chiefs, seated in front of the same chief’s house at Waikava on the south coast of Vanualevu. ... The occasion was the council of chiefs or bosevakaturaga which the governor, Sir Arthur Gordon, convened at Waikava in November 1877.
