P.99813.VH

Description

P.99812.VH and P.99813.VH; Two slightly different F.H. Dufty photographs taken outside of the same house at Draiba on the east coast of Ovalau, both with Charles Eyre, the clerk to the Commissioner of Lands, standing in doorway, wearing a white coat and his silly little hat. The vale has a ditch dug round it crossed by a single coconut log bridge.
In this picture a few young girls are present but otherwise boys and a few men have replaced the women. The man at right with tobe ringlets behind his head is wearing a qato or trochus shell bracelet. Two youths have donned chiefly iwabale shoulder sashes for the occasion. One youth holds a shotgun, another a club. Good details of everyday dress of the time.
Circa 1876.
