See P.100319.VH. [Fergus Clunie, 14/7/2003]

“Waikava. Meeting of chiefs. Large single and double canoes. Nov. 1877.” [von Hügel’s caption]
The date should be November 1876, not 1877. The occasion being the bosevakaturaga or Great Council of Chiefs meeting called by the governor, Sir Arthur Gordon, at Waikava or Fawn Harbour on the south coast of Vanualevu. The voyaging canoes include both medium-sized drua - so-called double canoes but actually canoes with hulled outriggers - and camakau, with solid wooden outriggers, all of them equipped with deckhouses. [Fergus Clunie, 17/10/2003, from record P.100319.VH, JD 2/2/2012]
